ROLLING STONE x VANS
DIRECTOR
BRIEF
Rolling Stone and Vans were taking to Tik-Tok with a two part, music-focused interview series with famous young skaters Ruby Lilley and Etíenne Turnball. This was a natural brand collaboration, and the deck emphasized a raw, off the cuff and “off-the-walls” video style, utilizing mixed media and graphics.
CREATIVE STRATEGY
- Conversational Interviews: On set, direction emphasized keeping the young skaters comfortable and loose during their interviews. I translated the client’s question list into light and fluid conversation, and made sure our day started with easy skate shots so they could be on their own turf.
- “Non-Product Shot” Product Shots: It was important that the product shots felt integrated and casual - they always skate in the famous Old Skool, today was no different. We made sure to get close-ups on all elements of their fits so that the shoes appear as the natural way to complete the look and own their tricks.
- Multi-format Heaven: To achieve variety and texture, my team and I selected a mix of vintage Cannon 16mm glass, Super 8, classic skater-cam Sony VX1000 DV tape, and 90s pocket cam footage.
- Collage Edit: In post, we worked with Kayli Sandoval on a signature mixed-media edit that ties up the short and sweet “day-in-the-life” piece on Ruby Lilley and ET.
